Bromelain
Bromelain is a proteolytic enzyme obtained from pineapple. The proteolytic activity of bromelain assists in the breakdown of dietary proteins and eases their digestion and absorption. This action of bromelain is particularly useful for individuals suffering from impaired protein digestion due to deficiency of pancreatic digestive enzymes. Having anti-inflammatory properties, bromelain helps to reduce symptoms of indigestion such as bloating, heartburn, gas and abdominal pain. Its proteolytic activity not only aids in the digestion of proteins but also enables it to rejuvenate skin and improve its texture by removing dead skin cells. Being milder than chemical exfoliants, bromelain provides a good alternative to the cosmetic industry for skin care products. In a research study, bromelain was extracted from pineapple waste and its potential to inhibit common skin pathogens was evaluated. The pathogens were found to be highly sensitive to a face wash formulation containing bromelain, which suggested its use in alleviation of acne.
Ceramides

Ceramides belong to a family of lipids found in epidermal layers of skin to provide an effective barrier against water loss and entry of foreign agents. A decrease in ceramide level in skin has been evidenced in aged people, people with dry skin and in those suffering from dermatitis. In a clinical study, pineapple fruit extract containing ceramides was developed from the edible portion for both oral intake and external application. The extract reduced skin dryness by increasing ceramides in the skin. The extract also inhibited the formation of melanin pigment in melanocytes. Both moisturizing effects and brightening effects were more pronounced when a combination of oral intake and external application was used compared to either oral intake or external application. Several new skincare formulations have incorporated ceramides with the goal of improving skin barrier function.
